At the king's court Daniel [[➝ Daniel, book of]] (Dan. 1:7) accepted this Babylonian name without protest, though it appears to incorporate a prayer to the god Bel (Marduk, Isa. 46:1), which seems inconsistent with his strict adherence to food regulations (Dan. 1:8).
